English Language Arts

As part of Black History Month and the celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we've been reading stories about taking a stand. We're looking at issues such as slavery and segregation and learning about leaders such as the Grimke sisters, Gandhi, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Talk with your child about when it might be necessary to take a stand and what are the appropriate ways to do so as an extension to our classroom discussion.

In writing the students are working on sentence structure- when and how to use compound sentences. We're learning how to use the organizational pattern of compare/contrast.

Mathematics

We've finished fraction concepts and are moving on to integers. Students will need to be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide integers.  They also need to know how to represent real situations with integers (such as a submarine diving to a depth of 200ft=-200).  Dealing with negative integers can often be confusing. Please help your child, if possible, by going over their assignments and allowing them to visit the sites to the right.

Science

The structure of the earth, Continental Drift, and Plate Tectonics are the focus in science for the next few weeks.  We'll be learning about not just how the earth's lithospheric plates work, but how they cause volcanoes and earthquakes to occur

Plate Tectonics

Natural disasters

Social Studies

We've been studying the ancient Hebrews in history and the development of the first recorded monotheistic religion, Judaism.

     Next stop, Ancient Greece!

Art

We're currently practicing our observation and descriptive language skills as part of art appreciation. We're looking at different works of art (or listening to, in the case of music) and making descriptive statements about the main elements of that work. We're also using Venn diagrams to compare and contrast various elements of different works.
